CFC and Refrigerator Disposal

Preamble

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been used as refrigerants in older model refrigerators and freezers. These manufactured chemicals have now been shown to affect the ozone layer in the stratosphere, allowing a greater intensity of ultra violet radiation to penetrate the atmosphere and reach Earth.

Policy

In line with the University’s General Environmental Policy, staff and students should be cognisant of CFCs used as a coolant and have unwanted refrigerators and freezers degassed and disposed of properly.
