Disposal of Special Waste by Departments

Policy

The collection, storage and disposal of general waste produced by departments and services as a result of normal day to day activities, is the responsibility of Facilities Management, funded from the budget allocation for Cleaning and Waste Management.

Waste in this category includes:

    • general refuse
    • Water Corporation general sewage fees
    • recycling of products from general refuse

Special wastes produced by departments and services are the responsibility of that department or service. Costs associated with the disposal of special wastes will be the responsibility of the department or service producing the waste.

The costs will include the costs of collection, storage, disposal and fees incurred as a result of the disposal of special waste.

Waste in this category include:

    • chemicals
    • confidential documents
    • radioactive material
    • biohazardous waste
    • monitored industrial waste to sewer

Note: The Water Corporation has always charged for industrial wastes going to sewer. At the University, this was previously limited to wastes from kitchens, and charges were levied on the wastes from University house and the Guild kitchens going through the grease traps. The Water Corporation has recently widened the net to include a charge for industrial wastes which enter the sewer via a dilution pit. The Water Corporation will monitor the BOD and suspended solids levels plus the volume of waste going to sewer. Pre-treatment by a department will reduce this cost.
