Industrial Waste to Sewer

Preamble

Industrial waste which is also known as trade waste, is essentially liquid waste from the workshops and laboratories which enters the sewer and is defined as the liquid, solid or gaseous refuse from any business, industry, warehouse or manufacturing premises other than domestic sewage, stormwater or unpolluted water. Proper disposal of this waste is regulatory and an environmental safety requirement.

In 1998 the Water Corporation's Industrial Waste Section advised all Institutions that Departments will now be held responsible for the disposal of their industrial waste to sewer. The Corporation believes each Department represents a business unit and therefore should be responsible and accountable for its industrial waste disposal. Previously UWA was the sole industrial waste permit holder which meant that one non-compliance from a single Department could cause the termination of the entire site.

Departments

  • Under the new Water Corporations requirements all Departments disposing of industrial wastes to sewer must obtain a permit to do so.
  • Departments will be charged by the Water Corporation on the quality/quantity of waste including BOD and suspended solid levels. This waste is considered special waste, and therefore, the cost will be borne by Departments.
  • Departments will keep their own yearly chemical inventories that will be available to the Water Corporation on request.
  • Each Department to nominate one point of contact for Industrial Waste.
Facilities Management
  • UWA to nominate one overall contact.
  • UWA to have one permit for central facilities. eg Central Plant.
