Requests to Increase Accommodation

Policy

It is the responsibility of the Dean of a faculty to resolve space issues within the existing faculty allocation. Thus a school that has too little accommodation should make its initial request for more space to the Dean, who will attempt to resolve the problem by reallocating space within the Faculty.

If it is not possible for the Dean to resolve the problem, he/she may refer it to Facilities Management for consideration by the Facilities Development Steering Group.

Deans are also asked to assign a priority to competing demands for accommodation within the Faculty. These priorities will be taken into consideration when decisions are being made about the allocation of limited resources.

When the Facilities Development Steering Group reviews the accommodation requirements it may decide to recommend any one of the following options:

  • A new building be provided at some time.
  • Existing accommodation should be refurbished using either Capital or Minor Works Programme funding.
  • Vacant accommodation is allocated to the Faculty to resolve a problem.
  • Accommodation is rented off campus, in which case the faculty or department will be asked to contribute towards the cost.
  • Occasionally approval may be granted for the use of a transportable building if it can be provided within the existing Senate Guidelines. The guidelines provide for the use of transportable buildings if there is no other solution to the problem, and on condition that approval is only for three years, after which it must be removed.
