Safety : Manual Handling

Preamble

The duties required of cleaning staff includes a large degree of manual handling.

Cleaning Services staff are therefore required to follow best practices in manual handling to reduce physical stress and minimise the risk of injury.

 

Policy

In accordance with the University Safety and Health Manual Handling Policy, the Cleaning Services section reviews work stations and tasks, and provides equipment and training to minimise staff injury caused by incorrect manual handling procedures.

  • work posture and position
  • workplace and work station layout
  • work organisation
  • work environment
  • duration, frequency and distance of manual handling
  • weights and forces
  • characteristics of loads and equipment
  • skills and experience
  • age
  • clothing
  • special needs
