Safety: Electricals

Preamble

In accordance with University safety and health policies, the Cleaning Services section will endeavour to provide a safe working environment for cleaning staff.

Policy

As electrical appliances are used constantly by cleaning staff, it is essential that safe working procedures are followed:

  • plug sockets which are used for portable electrical equipment are to be fitted with Residual Current Devices (RCDs) to meet WorkSafe requirements
  • where permanent RCDs are not available, electrical appliances are to be fitted with portable RCDs
  • heavy duty flexible cords should be used
  • flexible cords with severe twists, exposed wires or damaged plugs must not be used
  • PVC insulation tape must not be used to repair damaged cords
  • work on electrical devices must be carried out by a licensed electrical worker
  • work on wet areas should only be carried out with appliances and cords which are protected from wet conditions

  • Inform Supervisor immediately of any damaged or worn electrical equipment.
  • Use permanent RCD plug sockets where possible.

  • Organises checking of electrical appliances regularly according to Worksafe requirements.
