Safety: Laboratories
Policy
In accordance with the University Safety and Health Policy, the Cleaning Services section endeavours to provide a safe working environment for its staff.
Procedures
Procedures have been designed to protect cleaning staff when working in laboratories and around hazardous substances.

Cleaners |
- observe safety signs on entrances and within laboratories
- wear safety glasses
- wear closed shoes
- avoid very loose fitting clothing
- only clean areas specifically nominated
- do not clean ledges and sills where there are chemicals and/or equipment
- take care not to knock items off benches
- notify staff about equipment and materials which may pose a risk.
- in the event of spillage onto a person, wash with copious amounts of water and remove clothes
- make a note of chemicals spilt and seek advice immediately.
- if eyes are splashed with a substance, wash with copious amounts of water : seek medical attention immediately and take bottle with eye wash to use in transit
- after hours : deal with obvious water spillages and report non-water spillages to the Security Office - do not touch.
- never touch or remove wastes that are not in the general waste bin and that are not clearly general waste
