Vehicle Washing on Campus and Storm Water Policy

Preamble

The Department of Environmental Protection has strict guidelines for the protection of the Swan River and associated environs. Any contaminated waste water created on UWA must be disposed of properly. If the water cannot be directed to sewer it must be carted away.

To protect the Swan River, UWA has provided a car wash down area on the southern campus adjoining the north end of the Combined Workshop. This wash down bay has compressed air and water available for the cleaning of vehicles. The run-off liquid is directed to sewer where it can be treated properly at the Water Corporation's treatment plant.

 

Policy

On University property, no water other than storm water shall be directed to or allowed to wash down storm water outlets. This means water used for any washing or cleaning purpose that uses chemicals, detergents or that may contain organic contamination.

No water containing any amount of oil or derivatives shall be allowed to enter the storm water conduits.

No building slurry shall be allowed to enter the storm water conduits.

UWA Vehicles

University vehicles returning from research/expeditions may carry a variety of floral, fungal and bacterial contamination that could be potentially harmful to the Swan River eco system if wash-down waste water is allowed to enter the storm water system. These vehicles must be cleaned at the wash down bay.

Staff -Students

Private Vehicles

To prevent detergents and chemicals entering storm water conduits, private vehicle owners must also use the wash down bay. Owners using a car-washing contractor must direct them to the wash down bay.
