Waste Reduction Guidelines

Policy

University Environmental Policy supports waste reduction on campus for economic and environmental reasons.

The first priority in waste management is to reduce consumption of materials thus reducing expenditure and waste disposal charges.

Guidelines for waste reduction
  • Choose reusable products e.g. ceramic coffee mugs, glass drinking cups, metal silverware, rechargeable batteries and campus mail envelopes.
  • Purchase products with a long life: some products are designed for reliability, durability and ease of repair.
  • Buy in bulk to reduce packaging material.

Further information is provided in the policy on Purchasing Goods and Equipment.

Paper products represent the major proportion of campus waste.

  • encourage double-sided printing and copying
  • only print copies for actual distribution
  • regularly update campus mailing lists
  • post bulletins and brochures in a prominent location to reduce number of copies required
  • share magazines and catalogues
  • forward reports to essential persons only
  • use email whenever possible
