Facilities Management Sustainability PolicyPurpose of the policy and summary of issues it addresses:This policy details Facilities Management’s commitment to sustainability and efficient use of resources in planning and operations.
Definitions: Sustainability - implies that the critical activities of a higher education institution are ecologically sound, socially just and economically viable, and that they will continue to be so for future generations.
Policy statement: Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of facilities to support the University in its core businesses of teaching and research. In this capacity FM is committed to providing and operating University built environments, including buildings, infrastructure and landscaping in a sustainable manner to ensure the environmental integrity, social cohesion and economic efficiency of the University. By a process of continual improvement FM aims to lead the University in sustainable practices through efficient and effective environmental planning, operations and use of resources. Facilities Management will: - plan for sustainability across the FM business unit
- incorporate best practice environmental systems into our core business plans and management practices including transport, energy, ecology, occupant comfort, emissions and water
- work closely with employees, clients, suppliers and other stakeholders to continually improve our work practices and operations to be more environmentally sustainable
- communicate sustainability policies and procedures to all employees, clients, suppliers, consultants, contractors and stakeholders
- actively promote and encourage the adoption of sustainable work practices and operations within the University
- establish environmental working groups within the University community to support FM’s mission
- minimise or eliminate negative environmental impacts
- minimise the use of resources
- adopt established environmental rating criteria for sustainable development of buildings and infrastructure
- regularly monitor and report on our environmental performance
- comply with government environmental policy and legislation
- factor in to the decision making process on new buildings and assets expected increases in energy costs resulting from international and national efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions
- support campus sustainability strategic plans
- establish better links with Faculties and Schools to promote student and research involvement with ‘live’ FM sustainability projects
