UWA Paper Statistics

In 2006:

Purchased 82,000 reams of mostly virgin fibre (no recycled content) office paper
Used 41 million individual sheets of paper
Equivalent of 4,500 individual trees being felled

Purchasing Recycled Paper

All University of Western Australia offices are strongly encouraged to purchase recycled content paper from the University's preferred supplier for copy paper, Fuji Xerox. There is now an easy online ordering system for UWA customers - visit Financial Services for details of the set up procedure.

Fuji Xerox has the following types of quality recycled copy paper to choose from:

Green Wrap - 60% recycled, made in Australia

A4 white
A3 white
A4 cardstock
Folio sheets

Recycled Supreme – 100% recycled, made in Sweden

A4 white, pink, yellow, green, blue
A3 white

Recycled paper can be used in all University copy, fax and printing machines. All print jobs can also be supplied on recycled content paper.

In addition all offices should make use of double sided printing and other paper reduction strategies to reduce paper consumption.

‘Paper Smart’ Initiative

Want to be ‘Paper Smart’? The Office of Finance and Resources has done just that by making the commitment to purchase recycled paper and reduce paper consumption. Those that are participants include:

• Currie Hall
• Internal Audit
• IT Services
• Facilities Management
• Finance and Resources Directorate
• Financial Services
• Venues Management
• University Club

These divisions combined used approximately 1.8 million sheets of paper in 2006. By putting in place strategies to reduce paper consumption and purchasing recycled content paper these UWA departments are showing their commitment to sustainability on campus.

The ‘Paper Smart’ initiative is coordinated by Environmental Services and involves the following steps:

• Benchmarking – investigate paper consumption and costs
• Target – set a target to reduce paper consumption
• Commitment - buy recycled paper
• Communication – staff to be made aware of paper reduction strategies
• Promotion - achievements
• Monitoring – monitor and report on results
