Battery disposal

Batteries of any type are not to be disposed of in general waste as they contain a range of hazardous chemicals including Cadmium, Mercury and Nickel, all of which are toxic in high concentration.

Even though most batteries cannot yet be recycled in WA they are collected and then encapsulated for safe disposal to landfill.

Types of batteries and disposal on campus

Single use batteries

Single use primary batteries are:

  • Single use non-rechargeable consumer batteries.
  • Manufactured in three main shapes; cylindrical (AAA, AA, C and D sizes), rectangular (six and nine volt sizes) and button shaped.
  • Commonly alkaline batteries with Zinc and Manganese chemistry.

To recycle contact the Waste Management Officer or alternatively drop off at the south end of the Engineering building, second floor near the stairs in the 240L battery collection bin.

Rechargeable batteries

Buy rechargeable batteries to reduce battery waste. Each battery can be recharged up to 1000 times, saving you money and reducing pollution. There are many rechargeable batteries available.

At the end of their life dispose of as above for single use batteries.

Alternatively consider recycling rechargeable batteries. Cleanaway has a 'Battery Recycling Programme'. To find out more, visit cleanaway.com.au/batteries.

Car batteries

Car batteries are not to be disposed of in general waste, skip bins or left in car parks. For disposal contact the Waste Management Officer.
