Cycling

If you own a bike and know how to ride it, and don’t live too far away, then you should seriously consider riding to UWA at least some of the time.  Parking is free, you get fit, and it is the ultimate rebuke to rising fuel prices.

If you don’t ride to UWA, for all the usual excuses – we challenge you to give the bike a chance.  Why just have it gathering dust in the garage?

Cycling is particularly appealing if you live close but would have to catch public transport via Perth City.  For example it takes 20-25 minutes on the bike from Leederville, but 50 minutes on the buses.  Even with a shower at the UWA Recreation Centre it is quicker, and you’ve got all the exercise you need in a day.

But don’t just take our word for it – read what the UWA Bike User Group has to say about it.(text links to:

BIKE SECURITYU-Rails are provided all over campus to secure your bike.  Please be warned, bikes DO GET STOLEN at UWA, and you are urged to invest in a high quality bike lock, such as a Kryptonite D-Shackle bike lock, if you have an average to high quality bike.  These are available at a significant discount from the UWA Recreation Centre.  If you have a cheap/old bike then the risk of theft is much lower.  Many short distance commuters have a cheap bike for UWA and save the expensive bike for more serious rides.

UWA is planning a series of secure bike facilities (e.g. rooms and cages) around campus in the coming few years.  At present there is one such bike cage under the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery (enquiries to Facilities Management 6488 2023).

Many other staff members and post-graduate students store their bikes in their rooms or other areas inside UWA Buildings.  This is not encouraged by UWA Administration, but any policing varies from building to building.  You are still advised to lock your bike and not simply assume that it will be safe near your workstation.

SHOWERS AND LOCKERS
If you want a good shower after your ride, your best bet is to call in at the UWA Recreation Centre .  You don’t have to be a member.  You can also use lockers there, but demand is high so get in quick at the start of the year to secure one.

Around the rest of the campus Showers and Lockers are in relatively short supply.  Some buildings and faculties have lockers and showers, but many do not, and many are not easily accessed by students.  Your best bet is to ask at the reception of the building.
